Welcome back to the second edition of Disability Sports Australia’s (DSA) ‘Good News’ series. We regularly receive news about people doing wonderful things for the active disability space. These range from initiatives, to events, to someone sharing their story. This series compiles a shortlist of favourites we have noticed in the past month. 

We hope this series generates a snowball effect of good stories to share leading to further growth in the sector.  

Welcome to the inaugural edition of "Member Monthly," your monthly window into the activities of Disability Sports Australia's (DSA) member organisations. We are thrilled to promote the tremendous impact and inclusive sporting opportunities created by our dedicated state member organisations across the country.

In each edition, we will highlight the endeavours of three of our members, providing a glimpse into the events and accomplishments that have taken place across Australia over the past month.

Every day we are lucky to receive news about people doing wonderful things for the active disability space. These can range from initiatives to someone sharing their story. Disability Sports Australia is now compiling a shortlist of favourites that we’ve come across in the past month. 

We hope this series generates a snowball effect of good stories to share leading to further growth in the sector.  

My name is Rae Anderson, I am the Project Coordinator for the Activate Inclusion Sports Days and Start Up Kidz program for Disability Sports Australia. I was offered this role and jumped at the opportunity to be involved in such an important program and wonderful organisation.

This unique disability adaption program was run by Sport NSW with the funding support of Variety – The Children’s Charity NSW/ACT since 2016, catering for over 6,200 students aged 5 to 18 years of age with a physical, sensory or intellectual disability across NSW.

Due to the ongoing uncertainty regarding COVID-19 and the associated restrictions to international travel in 2021, the CPISRA International Conference on Physical Activity and Health for People with Cerebral Palsy or Acquired Brain Injury (2021 CPISRA International Conference) is going virtual from 8 -11 December 2021.

The Australian Sporting Alliance for People with a Disability (ASAPD) acknowledges International Day of People with a Disability (IDPwD) and supports its aim to promote greater understanding of disability issues and mobilise support for the dignity, rights and well-being of those with a disability, impairment or limitation.

DSA’s CEO, Murray Elbourn featured as a guest speaker on Inclusive Sports webinar as part of the Employment Life Skills & Leisure Expo, to discuss all things inclusive and adaptive sports.

Following detailed risk assessments and consultations that DSA has undertaken, the decision has been formally made to postpone the Start Up Kidz multi-adaptive sports program.

Disability Sports Australia (DSA) will be sending a team to the 2020 International Bowls for the Disabled (IBD) World Championships in October in New Zealand.

Disability Sports Australia (DSA), in partnership with the Australian Football League (AFL) are pleased to announce Hobart, Tasmania as the host location of the 2020 Toyota National Wheelchair AFL Championship to be held 2 - 4 April 2020.

International Day of People with Disability (IDPwD) is celebrated each year on 03 December 2019 to increase public awareness, understanding and acceptance of people with disability. Quaycentre in Sydney Olympic Park will this week play host to what many are expecting to be the most hotly contested Wheelchair Rugby National Championship in recent memory.

The late inclusion of the New Zealand Wheel Blacks to the tournament complements the five committed Australian state teams, each hoping to leave Olympic Park crowned the 2019 GIO Wheelchair Rugby National Champions.

Following a decision at a special General Meeting last Sunday by the membership of Disability Recreation and Sports SA (DRSSA) to wind up the organisation and enter into liquidation, immediate assistance is being provided by Disability Sports Australia (DSA) to DRSSA members.

Disability Sports Australia (DSA) has received a 3.4-million-dollar funding boost over the next four years under a Federal Labor Government to provide more opportunities for sport and recreation to Australians living with disability.

Disability Sports Australia (DSA) is excited to host the Multi-Disability Lawn Bowls National Championships in 2019 to be held in Mackay, QLD from Sunday, 19 – Friday, 24 May 2019 at Souths Suburban Bowls Club.

All eyes will be on South Australia at the Invacare 2019 Invacare Wheelchair Aussie Rules National Carnival as they chase their fourth consecutive victory in the annual tournament, this time with the advantage of playing on home soil for the first time.
