About us

Who We Are

Changing Lives Through Sport

Disability Sports Australia (DSA) is a national charity dedicated to increasing grassroots sport participation for people with disability.

In Australia, 4.4 million people — one in six — live with disability, yet only one in four play sport weekly.

High costs, inaccessible facilities and limited programs continue to exclude too many from the physical, social and mental benefits of participation.

For more than 60 years, DSA has been at the forefront of disability sport in Australia.

Born as the birthplace of wheelchair sport alongside our members, we went on to serve as the national peak body for physical disability in sport — governing wheelchair sports, coordinating national competitions, and supporting athletes to represent Australia on the international stage.

In 2013, several organisations merged to form Disability Sports Australia, uniting this proud heritage under one national identity.

We are also a founding member of Paralympics Australia.

What We Do

Today, we work across all levels of sport, from local clubs and schools through to national sporting organisations and councils to build capability, remove barriers, and create inclusive environments where every body can participate, belong and thrive.

We help people understand their options for getting involved in sport, so they can participate in the way that suits them best.

Every year, thousands of people with disability connect to sport in their local community through Abilities Unleashed and Try Para Sport.

Our Disability Sports NT business unit strengthens opportunities across the Northern Territory.

We also equip coaches, volunteers and clubs through resources like Accessibility Champion and Building Inclusive Sport Clubs, providing simple, practical tools to welcome every body.

Through our Sports Incubator program, we provide tailored support to National Sporting Organisations to strengthen accessibility and inclusion, while our Disability Advisory Committee ensures lived experience is central to our work.

Supported by government and our trusted partners, our programs are co-designed with communities to deliver meaningful change.

Through the Changing Lives Through Sport campaign, we raise awareness of the social, health and community benefits of inclusive sport and drive positive social change across Australia.

Our story has always been about creating opportunities. And until every body belongs in sport, our work is not done.
