Blacktown Disability Sports Centre
Australia’s first purpose-built indoor facility for disability sport. Now open in Western Sydney.
The centre
In 2022, Disability Sports Australia secured NSW Government funding to deliver the indoor training facility at Blacktown International Sports Park in partnership with Blacktown City Council. Construction commenced in 2023 and the Centre officially opened in 2025.
People with disability have often faced limited access to consistent court time, venues that were not fully accessible, and facilities not designed for the practical requirements of disability sport. The Centre was developed to help address these barriers by creating a purpose-built environment designed specifically for disability sport participation, training and competition.
Located within one of Australia’s largest integrated sport and recreation precincts and connected to the Blacktown Exercise Sport and Technology Hub (BEST), the Centre brings together community participation, disability sport, health, recovery and high performance training in one location.
Universal design from the start
At the heart of the Centre are two indoor courts, purpose-built to Paralympic specifications and supporting a range of disability sports.
The Centre supports training and competition from local through to international levels, alongside community participation and grassroots delivery.
Sports supported include:
- Sitting volleyball
- Goalball
- Badminton
- Wheelchair rugby
- Wheelchair basketball
- Boccia
Integrated with health, technology and community support
The Centre is located alongside the Blacktown Exercise Sport and Technology Hub (BEST), giving visitors access to:
- A strength and conditioning gym
- An aquatic recovery pool
- Allied health and sports medicine services
- Accessible accommodation at The Lodge
- A café and community play space
Visitors also benefit from the Centre’s collaboration with Western Sydney Local Health District and Australian Catholic University, supporting research, allied health training and sports medicine in disability sport.
Together, these facilities support athletes, coaches and community groups to train, compete and connect in one location, with amenities designed to help visitors balance training with work, family and study commitments.
A community focussed centre
The Centre was deliberately positioned as a community facility rather than an elite-only venue.
It supports participation across the full spectrum of disability sport, from first experiences through to ongoing involvement, alongside high performance training.
This positioning reflects a foundational decision in the project’s design: purpose-built disability sport infrastructure should be available to anyone who wants to participate, not only to those on a performance pathway.
The Blacktown Disability Sports Centre is now open and welcoming visitors.
Schools, community groups, sporting organisations and athletes can use the Centre for training, programs, competitions and events.
